The Role of Lexical cohesion in Text Consolidation - Short Stories as an Example

Abstract

 The title of this paper is (The Role of Lexical cohesion in Text Consolidation - Short Stories as an Example), which is within the linguistic of the text.  It discusses the role of semantic relationships in connecting and strengthening the text of short story. To do this, it relies on lexical attachment in the connected function grammar. Text analysis from a linguistic point of view is an important, complex and multidimensional task. The language of the text has got a great impact on conveying the purpose and message of the sender to the listener. On this research, the method of task analysis is relied upon.   The research materials include two short story texts which is entitled (Rust and Pain) and (Wolf and Blood), which are taken from the collection of short stories (Healthy Patient) by Goran Sabah.  The aim of this research is to answer several questions, including: (What is the role of semantic relationships in consolidating the text? What are the most important semantic relationships that are relied upon as cultural links in both short stories? Which one of cultural links is most used in both texts?  At the end of the study, we concluded that semantic relations play an important role in the unity of the text language, especially the text of short stories, each of the semantic units such as (repetition, synonym, antonym, coverage, friendship, part of the whole) is relied upon as a cultural link to strengthen the language of the text in the study example, Repetition is used more and coverage is used less in both texts. At the end of the study, the results and a list of sources are presented.
