The effect of Wheatley's strategy on Retention Some of the Basic Skills for volleyball for student of physical education Salahaddin University – Erbil

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Wheatley’s strategy in enhancing the retention of basic volleyball skills among second-year physical education students at Salahaddin University – Erbil. The research employed an experimental design with two equal groups (experimental and control), comprising 40 students selected from a population of 96. Over a period of eight weeks, the experimental group received 24 educational sessions, each lasting 45 minutes, based on Wheatley’s strategy, which includes structured educational tasks, cooperative group work, and active participation.

Pre- and post-tests were conducted to measure the acquisition and retention of volleyball skills. Results revealed a significant improvement in the performance of the experimental group compared to the control group, indicating that Wheatley’s strategy positively impacts the learning and retention of volleyball skills. The interactive and student-centered nature of the strategy contributed to a deeper understanding and better application of the skills.

The study concludes that applying Wheatley’s strategy in physical education enhances skill acquisition and retention. It recommends incorporating this modern strategy into physical education curricula and shifting away from traditional, teacher-centered methods to foster more effective skill learning.
